Living Room in the 2020 Decorator Showcase

Nothing could stop this year’s Showcase from coming to fruition! Through the madness of COVID-19 and the California wildfires, the team that brings us the Decorator Showcase each year found a way for all of us designers to share our designs without having a public gathering at the Showcase location. A full virtual tour of the house, and an interactive 3D tour can be found at the Decorator Showcase website. We are so happy to finally present our design for the living room in this year’s Showcase!

Random Nature Meets Balanced Geometry

Our overall design concept was California Coastal Living meets Bauhaus Sophistication. We were inspired by the natural surroundings of the property and chose to blend the unintentional beauty of nature with balanced geometry as is exhibited with the art and architecture. The room is full of exciting patterns and shapes juxtaposed against serene and dreamy elements. Our concept is the visual representation of a marriage between the perfect and the imperfect, casual, and elegant.

Taking a closer look at our living room layout, we’re focusing first on our custom made Cocktail table built with a sturdy base forged from trees by Aderyn Studio adding to the natural elements in our design with this organic presence. The tabletop is a thin slab of dark-toned marble for the from Da Vinci Marble, who also worked with us to form and install the Lilac Marble Fireplace against the far wall.

Flooded with natural light, everything from the textured wallpaper, to the collected sculpture and art installations provides a harmonious coupling featuring minimal details and a focus on balanced forms and abstract shapes alongside large scale mediums.

The furniture arranged on an irregular axis creates unexpected viewpoints, while each vertical plane focuses the eye on colorful art. We paired lines, circles, rectangles, and cylinders with free-form shapes found in nature. Then off-set the neutral palette of coarse textures and burnished surfaces with marble, glass, and silk velvets, accented with splashes of bright color.

The table in the corner of the room is the Kensington Table from Poliform. On this table is a collection of balanced, neutral pieces mixed with organic pieces finished with sharp and edgy metalwork. A smaller interpretation of our concept. We also wanted to add something soft and inviting and included the landscape in the corner of the room; it's something that draws the onlooker in and makes you want to enter the painting and live in its serenity.

The art we selected is a mix of bold and bright contrasted against calm and serene. The large black and white painting is a bold, geometric piece that we’ve placed next to the painting in calming green tones, this is a signature of what our design concept is.

Looking in at our space, the room almost reads as a gallery, but when you enter the space you see the comfort and the calmness of the atmosphere we’ve created. We wanted to take the symmetry of the room and twist it to create an aesthetic where natural and organic shapes are appointed next to bold and geometric man-made materials. The furniture layout is asymmetrical and casual enough for a family or group to gather in comfortably.

It has been an absolute pleasure to work with our extremely talented fellow designers, and we want to thank our amazing vendors who helped to make our room a reality:
